September Lawn Care Newsletter
Set your yard up for a strong fall recovery and a greener spring.
As we head into early fall, your lawn is preparing for recovery and rejuvenation after the stress of summer. Whether you're growing fescue, Bermuda, or Zoysia, this month is critical for setting your turf up for long-term health. Below are the key things to watch for and the steps we're taking to keep your lawn in peak condition.
1. Army Worms: Stay Alert
September is peak season for Army Worm activity. Even with preventative treatment, it's still possible to see caterpillars in your lawn. If they begin feeding, our product paralyzes their mouthparts quickly—but early detection is key.
What to look for:
- Rapid brown patches appearing overnight
- Birds congregating in your yard
- Visible caterpillars crawling on the turf surface
If you see any of this, give us a call immediately so we can inspect and respond if needed.
2. Aeration & Overseeding Season (Fescue Lawns Only)
Fescue lawns should be aerated and overseeded in September or early October. This process relieves compaction, improves root development, and thickens your turf before winter.
Reminder: If you haven't scheduled this service yet, please contact our office as soon as possible.
Slots are filling quickly, and timely seeding is critical to ensure proper germination before the soil cools.
3. Watering Needs: Dial It In
As temperatures cool and rainfall increases, adjust your irrigation.
- Newly seeded fescue lawns should stay consistently moist—light watering 2–3 times a day is ideal until germination.
- Established lawns should be watered 2–3 times per week, early in the morning.
- Avoid late evening watering, which encourages fungus.

4. Weeds and Grassy Intruders
Summer annual weeds like crabgrass and goosegrass are nearing the end of their life cycle, but dallisgrass, sedge, and other tough grassy weeds may still be active. We continue to spot treat problem areas during this time.
If you're receiving Ornamental Bed Weed Control, please remember:
- We cannot treat weeds growing inside ornamental plants
- Some hand-weeding will still be necessary
- Rain or irrigation within 24 hours is essential for proper activation
5. Lawn Color & Fertility
Fescue customers may notice a slight color fade after the stress of summer, but don't worry—your lawn will bounce back. This month, we begin adding nutrients to stimulate root development and prepare the turf for cooler temperatures.
