Late Winter Focus: "Set the Table" for Spring

Welcome to February!
Keeping Your World Green

February is where the best lawns are made—not with flashy growth, but by getting ahead of weeds and timing nutrients correctly. Our goal is simple: prevent problems now so you don't have to fight them later.

1) Pre-Emergent Game Plan: Beat Crabgrass Before It Starts

Crabgrass control is all about timing. Pre-emergent must be applied before seeds germinate, and a great seasonal marker is forsythia bloom (we aim to be down before the last blooms fall).

What we're doing:

  • Monitoring conditions to start spring weed prevention at the right time for our area.
  • Staying proactive so you're not paying for "catch-up" weed control later.

2) Warm-Season Lawns (Bermuda & Zoysia): Don't Rush Nitrogen

Bermuda and Zoysia are still mostly dormant in February. The biggest mistake we see is pushing nitrogen too early, which can lead to weak growth and more issues later.

A good rule: wait to apply nitrogen until soil temps are consistently ~65°F and rising (green-up underway).

What you can do now:

  • Keep traffic light on soggy turf.
  • Start planning spring mowing (sharp blades = cleaner cuts).
  • Let us handle the weed-prevention timing.

3) Fescue Lawns: Smart Feeding + Clean Conditions

Cool-season lawns like fescue can benefit from late-winter nutrition to support early spring growth, and many programs recommend a February application rate around 1 lb of nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft (when appropriate).

What TurfScapes emphasizes:

  • Practical fertility that supports roots and spring recovery (without pushing excessive top growth).
  • Building lawn strength so you're not constantly "starting over."

Homeowner Tips for February

  • Keep leaves and debris off the turf (less smothering, fewer moisture problems).
  • Mow only when needed and keep height appropriate (don't scalp).
  • Spot winter weeds early (henbit/chickweed/annual bluegrass are easiest to control before they mature).

Important Reminder: Pre-Pay Discount Deadline

Pre-payments must be submitted by February 15 to receive a 5% discount. If you want to lock that in, just call/text the office and we'll help you get it handled.
