Seasonal Update: A Fresh Start for a New Year

January marks the quietest month for turf growth—but beneath the surface, your turf is preparing for spring. This month's treatments focus on building strong foundations, preventing early weeds, and ensuring every lawn is set up for success as temperatures begin to rise.

Fescue Lawns: Feeding Early, Growing Strong

Fescue stays active through winter, so January is a perfect time to strengthen it. This month's application includes:

  • Quick-Release Nitrogen for an immediate bump in winter color and plant activity
  • Slow-Release Nitrogen to support long-lasting growth through late winter
  • Broadleaf Weed Control targeting cool-season weeds like chickweed, henbit, and clover
  • Pre-Emergent Protection to stop early spring weeds before they ever appear

This combination fuels root development and gives fescue a noticeable head start as spring approaches.

Warm-Season Lawns: Weed Defense & Root Health

Bermuda and Zoysia remain dormant above ground, but their root systems remain highly responsive. January's treatment focuses on protection and potassium:

  • Grassy & Broadleaf Weed Controls to eliminate winter weeds that compete for moisture and nutrients
  • Potassium Fertilization to strengthen roots, increase cold tolerance, and improve spring green-up
  • Pre-Emergents to block crabgrass and summer weeds before soil temperatures warm

Even in dormancy, these lawns benefit from strategic nutrition and weed suppression.

Homeowner Tips: Winter Lawn Care

  • Minimize foot traffic on frosted or soggy turf to prevent damage.
  • Keep leaves and debris off the lawn to reduce disease pressure.
  • Watch for winter weeds—if you notice new growth, that's normal. This month's treatment takes care of it.
  • Avoid early mowing until growth resumes in spring.
